My first book, FREE SPEECH AND MAGIC MONEY, is under contract with Harvard University Press. It traces cryptography’s development from secret military weapon to being embraced as a critical tool for protecting privacy and free speech against institutional surveillance.
The book tells the story of how cryptography came to be synonymous with freedom and privacy, emphasizing at every step the agency that real people had in shaping that history. It is also a critical examination of the stories that Silicon Valley tells about the innate power of technology—a much-needed antidote to feelings of hopelessness in the face of technological juggernauts.
